The Brief

Mark My Words: Trace the history of a word, group of words or phrase and show where it came from.

This brief asked for a typographic piece of work about the origins of a word, group of words or a phrase. Using typographic skills, the piece was to inform, interpret and express the findings and share them in a way that would surprise and delight the reader.

My chosen word was “palindrome” which are words that are the same backwards as forwards. However through research I discovered that they have roots in Christianity – being used to identify Christians. So while my content and layouts are based on these serious origins I have also incorporated the playful side of palindromes we all know today through type experiments in a concertina format.
